  1. Thanks scchua and Sayang. Well, I did finish but without really parsing DRAKE (neither Chambers nor Collins suggested a definition as a ship). If it is the meaning you found, well done!

  2. Hi Urieka
“… but without really parsing DRAKE (neither Chambers nor Collins suggested a definition as a ship).”

It is in Chambers: drake˛ – “a beaked galley, or Viking ship of war (historical)”.

  3. Thanks Sayang and scchua

Enjoyable puzzle with a couple of minor holdups.

Hadn’t parsed it with DRAKE as a ship – had used Sir Francis as a ship flyer (pilot) – a double use of flyer and a stretch of it’s use. Was happy to see a more straightforward second definition. Also had not seen MIDGE as a small person and was looking for midget to be cut.

Almost my pet hate with SHEAR (with the optional letter blocked) – but very well clued to take out any ambiguity.

  4. Gaufrid @2 – Thanks and I think you have proved to me something that I had wondered from previous experiences, namely that the online Chambers dictionary is not the same as the BRB. (The online one is free though so can’t really complain.) I do like the Collins online version very much though.
