Thanks for the blog.
I think in 9d the definition is “He” = man (in German) = Herr + MADE LIST to give the compound anagram.
It seems odd to have the definition as a single word in the middle of the clue. I can’t remember having seen another clue like this anywhere.
Azed has done composite anagrams in a similar format before, in some ways separating the fodder makes them a bit easier.
I can’t remember where but I was convinced there was a misprint in one of the clues, held me up for ages until I got the reading right. Often the way with such a cunning cluer.
sidey – what would you say is the definition for 9dn? Is it ‘he’, ‘Hitler’ or something else? Does the clue have a definition? I’m still a bit baffled.
As shikasta says, it’s He, but it’s sort of &lit. All the other stuff in the clue is the two anagrams and the anagrind. I think Azed is unique in using this device in quite this form. You also need to think about H’s philosophy of purity of race and who was ‘in’ so to speak. I’m beginning to waffle but I hope you get the drift.
