Independent Crossword 8859 by Nestor (07-03-2015)

With spring just around the corner a tussle with Nestor beckons.

Nestor’s puzzles are always good fun and this one was no exception. He seems to squeeze that extra little bit of crypticism out of the clues often combining several devices into one clue.

Thanks Nestor.

  1. Although I got the two long across answers fairly quickly it took me a while to get on Nestor’s wavelength. I finished the LHS before the RHS and the very clever DROPLET was my LOI after THROTTLE.

  2. Thanks Nestor and twencelas.

Small point about 4dn: My copy (downloaded from Crossword Solver today) says “deceived one” not “deceiving one” in the clue as the indicator for DUPE.

  3. How to derive an irrational root – TURNIP – Brilliant! My new favouritest ever crossword clue.

  4. “Today is (probably) the only super pi day you will ever see, 3/14/15”, at least that is what the American newspapers say (but if pi = 3.14159, I think next year, 3/14/16, would be nearer to the value). I wonder if Nestor had this in mind for 11a, TURNIP?

Thank you for a fun puzzle Nestor, and twencelas for a helpful blog.

  5. I see that I should have posted at 9:27 to get 3.1415927 (it is only by chance that I posted at 9:48, it was 10:48 pm where I live, but at least the 9 is accounted for).
